Searching

I am super, super excited about the new sources available to students.  We currently have a trial for e-books from Gale.  It has so many valuable resources and the best part – it searches all sources at the same time.
Also, it allows you to mark the articles/sources creating a URL that specifically directs patrons back [...]

Can I just tell you about…. (AP CA III)

Don’t you love it when you have great classes?  Today, I am starting the synthesis research paper with juniors in advanced placement English classes.  We are discussing the wonderful and exciting world of citations   AND it has actually been exciting (it might be the cartwheels I do during the class – I’m kidding).
Last [...]

Exciting news… ProQuest is stepping it up

I just received an email yesterday from the people at ProQuest.  For ProQuest Platinum subscribers, a one-stop searching function will be launched December 17th.  Basically, a student can search for information from all databases – including those not related to ProQuest.  For example, the AP CA III classes today were searching for articles by particular [...]

Blogs as sources…maybe, but…

In a recent Will Richardson blog, he posts:  “What if we stopped blocking blogs and implicitly telling students that they aren’t reliable and instead start making them a part of our daily classroom practice?”
I feel I need to enter this conversation, but then I think, no wait – maybe I am too outdated in my [...]

AASL Assessment Conference

Just came back from the AASL Assessment Conference in Rhode Island. Lots of good information to take with me.
Thoughts from the conference…
1.  Collaboration is key to being a part of the assessment process.
2.  I often informally assess students’ information literacy skills, but I do not record that information for future use or for dissemination.  How valuable these [...]

Web Page Lifespan – Linkrot

Today, KPR (Kansas Public Radio) had an intriguing commentary about the lifespan of a web page.
http://66.116.209.168/kprnews.php
In two years, the average life of a website diminishes drastically.
1/2  .com sites lost
1/3  .edu sites gone
1/10 .gov sites disappear
In addition, links to other web sites provided by an online source have a shorter lifespan.
In 3 months, four percent of [...]

Citation Maker

Although the citation machine and noodletool type citation creators are awesome, students had a difficult time adjusting the sites to our type of resources in the library.  So often, I ended thinking to myself, “I wish they would have done this…”
I borrowed a Coldfusion book from a web design teacher in my building and created [...]
