Animoto – Why I love it…

Animoto is a great site for student projects.  To me, it beats out all software – Photostory, Movie Maker, and even iMovie.  Why?
1.  Can be accessed from any computer with Internet access.
2.  Although it won’t take video, it creatively displays photos, so you don’t even notice.
3.  Only allows small amount of text per slide. (Typically, students [...]

First Semester Report

Typically, we provide monthly reports to our administrators – we keep stats, count classes, and make copies.  These go in their mailboxes until the next month.  However, this year we changed to semester reports and added a new feature, assessed indicators.  We looked at our KS State Reading Assessment tested indicators and noted each time [...]

This is a double-post from the JAG Stacks newsletter blog for teachers at staff at West.
With new 2.0 tools, there are new ways to visualize text that can possibly enhance understanding and engage students.

Tagcrowd and Wordle provide visual representations of words.

Voicethread

I am teaching voicethread class this afternoon to teachers in our district.  For the class, I created a resource wiki (http://bvvoicethread.wikispaces.com/), so we can post new ideas and access resources that I found to help beginners.
We recently purchased the education license of Voicethread.  It makes it easier to manage for the most part.  Recently, they [...]

Plagiarism Example

I am always looking for real world examples when discussing plagiarism with students.  Often, it seems that taking something from another site is not a big deal.  I found this recent company blog article discussing how another company used their words.  Although to me, the offense is very slight, it does a good job of [...]

Tornado

Last week, my plan was to post our annual report and provide a link to our updated BV West Reads page.  However, my parents’ house was hit by a tornado in Manhattan, KS and we just got back from the clean-up.  I posted some photos on Google Picasa and thought I would embed here.

My colleague, Amanda Davis, and I presented at the Kansas Library Conference this year.  Our presentation, Power of Publishing, addressed how publishing students work through Web 2.0 tools can motivate students and truly impact their learning.   Information from the presentation was posted to a wiki http://power2publish.wikispaces.com/ .  If anyone uses these tools, please let us know – we [...]
