Hi Becca, thanks for adding your report to the Google Spreadsheet. I read it with great interest. I too struggle with classes who want to use the library for non-research based activities. I am tossing around a few possibilities:
- keep the sign-up sheet in my office/with me so that teachers must discuss with me why they want to bring their classes in. This also gives me the opportunity to ‘rescue’ classes from poor assignments by making suggestions to the teachers.
- I have given priority to classes wanting to do research and have gone so far as to say that those wishing to use the lab for simple word-processing may not sign up until the end of school on the day before they wish to bring their class in.
- Trying out this perspective: The library is my classroom, the place where I work on information literacy skills with students and collaborate with teachers, rather than the library as a space that can be used for any purpose.
It’s a fine balance, I don’t want to alienate staff but I do want to keep the space available for those who truly want to teach their students research skills and use me as one of the resources.
